In 1863, Frederick Charatan opened a shop in Mansell Street, London where he began to carve Meershaum pipes. Popularity quickly increased and Charatan moved into larger premises on Prescot Street. Here, he began to make the briar pipes that would make the Charatan name world famous. When Frederick retired in 1910, his son Reuben took over the business and it remained wholly owned by the Charatan family until 1960.

Charatan was the first brand to entirely handmake briars from complete burls to the finished pipe including the stems. This differentiated Charatan from other makers who assembled their pipes from pre-drilled bowls and delivered mouthpieces. Hand-carving pipes this way became known as "Charatan's Make" and these pipes established a reputation as the best in England.

In the early 21st Century, Dunhill Tobacco of London, through House of Edgeworth, launched a range of Charatan Cigars, blended exclusively for the UK Cigar Smoker with a unique blend of Nicaraguan and Indonesian tobaccos. They were an instant success and in a short space of time Charatan became the #1 Nicaraguan Brand in the UK.

Today under the ownership of Tor Imports Ltd, Charatan is produced by Joya De Nicaragua in Esteli, Nicaragua, in the country's oldest, most prestigious and original factory.

The unicorn that appears on each box embodies the craft and heritage of Charatan. It is a symbol of mythology, individuality and as the national animal of Scotland - of quintessential Britishness.

Charatan is a uniquely British cigar; a light and medium smoke that can be enjoyed anywhere, at    any time.
